ONE YEAR OF THE MAHAMA ADMINISTRATION: A MASTERCLASS IN ECONOMIC RESTORATION AND CITIZEN-CENTERED GOVERNANCE

ONE YEAR OF THE MAHAMA ADMINISTRATION: A MASTERCLASS IN ECONOMIC RESTORATION AND CITIZEN-CENTERED GOVERNANCE

Lawrence 10-01-2026

This is my assessment and opinion on H.E. John Dramani Mahama's government since he took the oath of office to lead Ghana into a new era of prosperity on December 7, 2025. For the people of Jaman South and the nation at large, this first year has been defined by a decisive move from economic despair to measurable stability.Under the leadership of President Mahama, the NDC government has delivered on its promise to "Reset Ghana," implementing a series of bold macroeconomic and microeconomic reforms that have brought immediate relief to households and businesses.

I. MACROECONOMIC STABILITY: RESTORING THE FOUNDATION

One year ago, Ghana’s economy was in a state of freefall. Today, the numbers tell a story of remarkable recovery:

- Decisive Inflation Drop: Inheriting a staggering inflation rate of 23.8%, the administration’s fiscal discipline has crashed inflation to 5.4% as of January 2026. This cooling of prices has restored the purchasing power of the Ghanaian worker.

- Cedi Recovery and Strength: The Ghana Cedi, which was trading at GH¢14.70 to the US Dollar in late 2024, has been stabilized and significantly strengthened, currently trading at approximately GH¢10.50. This 40% recovery has drastically reduced the cost of imports for local businesses.

II. MICROECONOMIC RELIEF: DIRECT IMPACT ON YOUR POCKET

President Mahama understands that "statistics don't buy food."Therefore, the government has focused on policies that put money back into the pockets of Ghanaians:

- Historic Fuel & Transport Relief: Leveraging a stronger Cedi and falling global crude prices, the government has ensured fuel prices remain low. This led to a 15% nationwide reduction in transport fares in May 2025, providing massive relief for commuters and traders.

- Tax-Free Living (The Repeal Era): In a major win for the youth and small businesses, the President officially signed into law the cancellation of the Betting Tax, the E-Levy, and the Emissions Levy. These "nuisance taxes" are now a thing of the past.

- Reduced Data & Call Costs: Following a strategic VAT review, the government reduced the effective tax rate on telecommunications. As of January 2, 2026, MTN and other providers have reduced tariffs, making mobile telephony and internet services more affordable for all.

  • III. National Development: Powering the 24-Hour Economy

- Stable Electricity (24/7): The administration has ended the era of energy uncertainty. Ghana now enjoys a stable, 24/7 electricity supply, which is the vital fuel for the President’s 24-Hour Economy initiative.

THE JAMAN SOUTH IMPACT:

In Jaman South, our market women in Drobo and surrounding towns are paying 15% less for transport, and our youth are finally free from the burden of the E-Levy and betting tax, allowing them to reinvest their small earnings into their future.

EMPOWERING THE FUTURE

President Mahama’s first year is a testament to the belief that *the youth must be empowered to "win the world."* By removing the barriers of high taxes and inflation, the government is creating a fertile ground for the Joshua Generation to thrive.
