Paul Adom-Otchere Bail Saga Deepens as Lawyer Thaddeus Sory Distances Himself From ‘Intervention’ Claims
The Ghana Voice 03-08-2025The fallout from Paul Adom-Otchere’s post-bail “thank you” video continues to gather momentum, with prominent lawyer Thaddeus Sory now publicly clarifying his role after being named among those who allegedly intervened to secure the former GACL Board Chairman’s release from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
In a Facebook post on Saturday, Mr. Sory said he does not represent Adom-Otchere in the ongoing investigation and that his involvement was limited to offering general advice — something he often does for people contacted by investigative bodies such as the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), or the OSP.
“I get calls from several people invited to EOCO, CID, OSP etc to advise on what to expect. I tell them what I think. If they are thankful, fine — but I do not, just by that, represent them,” Sory wrote.
Responding to a follower who commented on his Facebook wall, Mr. Sory asked them to “please ask one of our lawyers what ejusdem generis means” — a Latin legal term he appeared to invoke in connection with how his name had been grouped alongside others in Adom-Otchere’s remarks.
What Does “Ejusdem Generis” Mean?
Ejusdem generis is a Latin phrase meaning “of the same kind”. In law, it is a rule of interpretation used when a list of specific items is followed by more general terms. The principle holds that the general terms should be understood to include only items of the same type as the specific ones listed.
For example, in a law that says “cars, trucks, and other vehicles,” other vehicles would be interpreted to mean vehicles similar to cars and trucks — not airplanes or boats.
In the context of Sory’s statement, it may have been a subtle way of saying he should not automatically be lumped into the same category as others mentioned by Adom-Otchere simply because his name was listed alongside theirs.
Background: From Bail to Backlash
Adom-Otchere was charged on July 31 in connection with a controversial revenue assurance contract at GACL and spent days in OSP custody after failing to meet the original bail condition of providing two landed properties in his name. He was released after the OSP accepted revised terms secured by the Jospong Group of Companies acting as surety.
Shortly after his release, a video surfaced in which he named a string of influential personalities and institutions — including the Manhyia Palace, religious leaders, political figures, and Lawyer Sory — as having contacted him or intervened to aid his release.
The video has sparked intense debate online, with some praising him for revealing the “pretences of the system” and others accusing him of recklessness, poor judgment, and compromising the reputations of revered institutions.
