The Ghana Voice 15-09-2025

The Ghana Medical Association and the entire health fraternity are mourning the passing of Prof. Dr. Dr. Sir George Wireko-Brobby, a towering figure in Ghana’s medical profession and a pioneer in Otorhinolaryngology (ENT).

Born in 1942 in Ghana, Prof. Wireko-Brobby pursued his medical studies at the University of Marburg in West Germany between 1964 and 1973, where he earned dual doctoral degrees in Medicine and Dentistry, graduating with Magna cum Laude honors in both fields. His outstanding academic journey laid the foundation for a remarkable career dedicated to advancing medical education, research, and patient care.

He rose to become Professor of ENT and served as Dean of the School of Medical Sciences at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). Prof. Wireko-Brobby also held prestigious leadership positions, including Past President of the Ghana Medical Association and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. Until his passing, he was the sitting President of the Ghana Postgraduate College of Physicians and Surgeons.

His professional footprint extended well beyond Ghana. In 1996, he was appointed a World Health Organization (WHO) Consultant on the Prevention of Deafness and Hearing Impairment, a role that enabled him to work with ENT departments and institutions across Africa, Europe, and Asia—including Kenya, Zambia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, the UK, Germany, India, and Malta.

Prof. Wireko-Brobby also played an influential role on the international stage, serving as President of the Initiative for Deaf Education in Commonwealth countries (1990–1998), Secretary-General of the Pan-African Federation of Otolaryngological Societies (PAFOS), and later its President from 1999 to 2004. His academic contributions were equally vast, including serving as Associate Editor of Hearing International (Japan), co-Editor of the British Medical Journal – African Edition, and Editorial Board Member of both the Ghana Medical Association Journal and the KNUST Journal.

His passing marks the end of an era for Ghana’s medical community. Prof. Wireko-Brobby will be remembered not only for his academic brilliance and leadership but also for his tireless advocacy for ear and hearing health on the global stage.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
