“NPP CAUGHT LYING ON MTN CHARGES!” — NDC Pro- Forum USA FIRES BACK OVER MOBILE MONEY UPROAR

The Ghana Voice 02-06-2026

A fierce political storm has erupted over MTN Ghana’s proposed 0.75% mobile money transfer charge, with the NDC Professionals Forum-USA accusing the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of deliberately misleading Ghanaians for political gain.

In a strongly-worded statement issued on June 1, the group condemned what it described as “dishonest propaganda” by the NPP Minority in Parliament, over claims that the proposed charge was a backdoor reintroduction of the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy).

According to the NDC Professionals Forum-USA, the proposed charge was not a government policy, tax, or levy introduced by the NDC administration but rather a commercial decision initiated by MTN Ghana.

“The attempt to portray the charge as a hidden E-Levy is dishonest, irresponsible, and intended to create fear and confusion among Ghanaians,” the statement declared.

The group expressed surprise that such claims were being championed by senior members of the opposition, insisting that the facts surrounding the issue were clear from the outset.

The Forum also praised the Bank of Ghana for stepping in swiftly to halt the implementation of the proposed charge pending further consultations and regulatory review.

According to the statement, the intervention demonstrates the government's commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring fairness within Ghana’s growing digital financial ecosystem.

In a sharp attack on the previous administration, the Forum reminded Ghanaians that it was the NPP government that introduced the widely unpopular E-Levy, which many citizens blamed for increasing the cost of financial transactions and worsening economic hardship.

“It is ironic that those who imposed E-Levy are now presenting themselves as defenders of the ordinary Ghanaian,” the statement noted.

The NDC Professionals Forum-USA urged the government to remain focused on its economic recovery agenda and not be distracted by what it called “political theatrics” from the opposition.

The group further appealed to the public to remain vigilant and reject attempts by politicians to distort facts for partisan advantage.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the Forum’s support for transparency, consumer protection, digital financial inclusion, and sustainable economic growth.
