Dwumfour Vows Stronger Legacy with Health-Backed GJA ID Cards in Second Term Bid
The Ghana Voice 21-06-2025Journalists across Ghana are set to benefit from official Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) membership cards embedded with healthcare benefits, as part of bold welfare reforms announced by the Association’s President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program on Friday, June 20, 2025, Dwumfour revealed that the new GJA ID cards will double as access passes to medical care at selected health facilities under a proposed Journalists’ Insurance Policy.
This initiative, he explained, is a central pillar of his re-election campaign as he seeks a second and final term in the GJA elections slated for June 30, 2025. He appears first on the ballot.
Running under the theme “Legacy Regime: Securing Our Achievements” and the resonant slogan #JournalistsLivesMatter, Dwumfour is positioning his candidacy as one focused on continuity, accountability, and journalist welfare.
“We are building an association that gives hope to journalists,” he declared. “If you attack a journalist, you’ve attacked me—the President. And I will make sure you suffer the consequences. We will come after you.”
Describing his first term as a foundational period, he called on members to support the completion of transformative projects launched under his leadership.
“Let’s finish what we started. Let’s protect the legacy,” he urged, highlighting partnerships, press freedom advocacy, and capacity-building programs spearheaded during his tenure.
To critics questioning his direct impact, Dwumfour responded:
“Someone asked what we’ve done for him personally. I said maybe you don’t see it yet—but the bigger picture is a stronger, more vibrant GJA that benefits us all.”
The proposed GJA Membership Card will go beyond mere identification.
“We’ve received proposals from three companies. Once finalized, the card will entitle members to at least one medical check-up annually at designated hospitals,” he said. “This is crucial in addressing the stress and health issues many media professionals face.”
He reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to safeguarding press freedom and ensuring legal protection for all members.
“Every journalist deserves a safe space. That’s the association we are building—one that stands with you in your time of need.”
As the election day nears, Dwumfour is appealing to members to vote not just for him, but for continuity and deepened reforms.
“I am grateful for your support. Let’s secure the legacy together. Still: #JournalistsLivesMatter.”
The GJA elections will take place nationwide on June 30, 2025, at all approved polling stations.
