Government Increases Cocoa Producer Price by 62.6% for 2025/26 Season

The Ghana Voice 04-08-2025

The Government of Ghana has announced a substantial increase in the producer price of cocoa for the 2025/2026 crop season, raising the rate from US$3,100 per tonne to US$5,040 per tonne. The new price, representing a 62.58% rise in dollar terms, takes effect from Thursday, August 7, 2025.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Finance and Chairman of the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC) on Cocoa, following a meeting of the committee which agreed on the new price structure.

According to the Minister, the new rate equates to 70% of the gross Free-On-Board (FOB) value of US$7,200 per tonne, in line with President John Mahama’s pledge to ensure cocoa farmers receive 70% of the FOB price.

“This decision underscores our commitment to improving the livelihoods of cocoa farmers,” the Minister stated, contrasting the move with the previous administration’s 2024/25 cocoa season rate, which was set at 63.9% of an FOB value of US$4,850 per tonne despite stronger world market prices at the time.

The Minister explained that the gross FOB value for the coming season was determined using outstanding cocoa contracts of about 100,000 tonnes sold at US$2,600 per tonne in the 2023/2024 crop season, combined with an average forecast for 2025/2026.

With an average exchange rate projected at GHS10.25 to the US dollar for the 2025/2026 season, the cedi equivalent of the new producer price moves from GHS49,600 per tonne to GHS51,660 per tonne. This translates into GHS3,228.75 per 64-kilogram bag of cocoa.

Government stressed that the new price will take effect from August 7, 2025, and urged stakeholders in the cocoa sector to comply with the revised pricing to ensure farmers benefit fully from the increase.
