Wave of Endorsements Boosts Albert Kwabena Dwumfour’s Bid for Re-Election as GJA President

The Ghana Voice 27-06-2025

With just days to go before the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) heads to the polls, a powerful wave of endorsements is solidifying support for the re-election of Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, whose leadership is being widely praised across the media landscape.

The latest to add his voice is Cecil Sunkwa-Mills, President of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), who described Dwumfour as the “ideal candidate for continued leadership,” citing his dedication to press freedom, journalist welfare, and institutional reforms.

“Albert possesses the vision and collaborative spirit needed to advance our media landscape,” Sunkwa-Mills stated in a glowing endorsement. “His re-election will ensure continuity of the progress we've seen in promoting the principles of journalism and supporting the growth of our profession in Ghana.”

But Sunkwa-Mills is far from alone.

A constellation of respected media heavyweights and influential voices have publicly backed Dwumfour's bid, painting a compelling picture of a unifying leader with cross-sector appeal:

  • Kwasi Pratt Jnr, veteran journalist and Managing Editor of The Insight Newspaper, lauded Dwumfour's bravery in protecting press freedom and his commitment to a more professional media environment.

  • George Sarpong, Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, cited Dwumfour’s reform-oriented leadership style and his knack for consensus building.

  • Kwabena Yeboah, ace sports journalist and President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), emphasized Dwumfour’s inclusive leadership and his respect for journalistic ethics.

  • Chief Akilu Sayibu, veteran journalist and Chief Editor of Voiceless Media, described Dwumfour as “a forward-looking leader who truly understands the pulse of Ghanaian journalism.”

  • Osei Bonsu ("OB") and Omanhene Kwabena Asante, the dynamic hosts of Ekosi Sen? on Asempa FM, threw their weight behind Dwumfour, praising his accessibility and practical reforms during his first term.

  • Dr. Felix Dela Klutse, Director of the Pent Media Center, endorsed Dwumfour for his strategic vision and institutional accountability.

  • Sadick Adams ("Sports Obama"), the widely respected sports journalist and morning show host on Angel FM and TV, highlighted Dwumfour’s proactive efforts in uniting sports and news media under one umbrella of professionalism.

  • Nathaniel Attoh, Editor of Joy Sports and a leading figure in events and thought leadership at the Multimedia Group, described Dwumfour as “a bridge-builder who’s laid the foundation for the future of Ghanaian journalism.”

The diverse and growing support reflects a strong endorsement of Dwumfour’s track record during his first term. Many cite his advocacy for journalist protection, effective stakeholder engagement, and leadership in forming the Media Coalition to support free and fair elections.

With endorsements pouring in from across print, broadcast, and digital platforms, as well as from both mainstream and niche voices in journalism, Dwumfour’s campaign is gathering momentum ahead of the crucial vote.

As the GJA prepares to elect its next president, the question remains: Will the unified chorus of media veterans, rising voices, and institutional leaders translate into a renewed mandate for Albert Kwabena Dwumfour? Come June 30, the verdict will be in the hands of Ghana’s journalists.
