JAMAL REPEATS HISTORY! From Akwatia to Ayawaso East – Baba Jamal Storms Back to Parliament in Landslide Win
The Ghana Voice 04-03-2026Baba Jamal has done it again!
In a dramatic political comeback that echoes the cross-constituency victories of Boniface Abubakar Saddique in Salaga South and Madina, Baba Jamal has etched his name into Ghana’s political history books by winning the Ayawaso East by-election after previously serving as MP for Akwatia in the Eastern Region.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate delivered a commanding performance at the polls on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, sweeping aside his opponents in a decisive landslide.
The by-election was triggered by the sad passing of the sitting MP, Mahama Naser Toure, in January — a vacancy that set the stage for a fiercely watched contest in the Greater Accra stronghold.
When the ballots were counted, the numbers told a powerful story:
Baba Jamal (NDC) – 10,884 votes
Yusif Ali Baba (NPP) – 4,009 votes
Mohammed Umar Sanda (Independent) – 1,885 votes
Kanor David – 104 votes
Ibrahim Idrissu – 43 votes
Out of 17,048 total votes cast, 16,928 were valid, with 120 rejected ballots.
The margin of victory confirmed what many political observers had predicted. Research firm Global InfoAnalytics had projected a dominant win for Baba Jamal after a pre-election survey placed him far ahead of his rivals — and the electorate delivered exactly that.
Despite low voter turnout across several polling centres, the exercise was peaceful, with electoral officers and security personnel maintaining order throughout the day.
For Baba Jamal, this victory marks a stunning return to frontline politics. After serving as MP for Akwatia and later representing Ghana diplomatically as High Commissioner to Nigeria, he now returns to Parliament — this time as the voice of Ayawaso East.
The win not only cements the NDC’s grip on the constituency but also reinforces Baba Jamal’s reputation as a seasoned political heavyweight capable of reinventing himself across regions.
He is expected to be sworn into Parliament in the coming days to continue the legislative work of the late Mahama Naser Toure.
From Akwatia to Ayawaso East ,Jamal has truly repeated history.
