TRAGEDY IN ACCRA NEW TOWN: 2 DEAD, WORSHIPPERS TRAPPED IN BUILDING COLLAPSE
The Ghana Voice 30-03-2026Panic and heartbreak struck Accra New Town on Sunday evening after an uncompleted multi-storey building suddenly collapsed, killing two people and trapping several worshippers beneath the rubble.
The shocking incident happened after a heavy downpour, turning what should have been a peaceful Sunday into a desperate rescue mission.
Confirming the tragedy, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, revealed that two lives have been lost, while at least 14 people have been rescued so far.
WORSHIPPERS CAUGHT IN DEATH TRAP
The building, located inside the premises of the Accra New Town Experimental Basic School, was reportedly being used by a group of Christian worshippers when disaster struck. The structure, still under construction, gave way without warning—burying victims under heaps of concrete and debris.
VOICES FROM UNDER THE RUBBLE
In chilling scenes, some trapped victims were reportedly heard crying out for help from beneath the wreckage—sparking a frantic, race-against-time rescue effort.
RESCUE TEAMS IN NIGHT BATTLE
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, National Disaster Management Organisation, and Ghana National Fire Service have taken over the scene, working through the night with floodlights and heavy equipment to save those still trapped.
LOCALS FIRST ON THE SCENE
Before emergency crews arrived, brave residents and bystanders rushed in, digging with bare hands and simple tools to pull survivors from the debris.
INJURED RUSHED TO HOSPITAL
Several injured victims have been sent to nearby hospitals as authorities seal off the area to allow rescue operations to continue safely.
