Regional Minister Orders Halt to Controversial East Legon Overpass Construction
The Ghana Voice 09-02-2026In a decisive move to protect public safety and uphold urban planning regulations, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ohenewaa Ocloo has ordered an immediate halt to construction activities at a new structure being erected near the East Legon Police Station.
The Minister conducted an unscheduled site inspection earlier today alongside her technical team after reports emerged about the project. While developers claimed the construction was backed by a valid permit, concerns were raised regarding its location, which reportedly encroaches on the right-of-way and poses potential risks to critical public infrastructure.
Following the inspection, the Minister issued several directives:
Cessation of Works: All construction activities at the site are to stop immediately.
Removal of Materials: Developers have been instructed to dismantle any framework and remove all construction materials from the site.
Permit Re-evaluation: The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has been formally engaged to review and revoke any permits allegedly issued for this location.
The Minister emphasized that the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council remains committed to structured and lawful urban development. “We will not tolerate developments that compromise public safety or bypass the rigorous standards required for urban expansion,” she stated.
She added that the sanctity of public spaces must be preserved, urging full cooperation from developers and stakeholders as authorities enforce the directives.
The action highlights ongoing efforts to ensure that the rapid development in Greater Accra adheres strictly to regional spatial regulations, protecting both residents and critical infrastructure.
