President Mahama Nominates Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice
The Ghana Voice 24-09-2025President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Supreme Court judge, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, as the next Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.
In a statement signed by Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President said the nomination was made in accordance with Article 144(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the President to forward the name of a nominee for Chief Justice to the Council of State for consideration.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has been serving as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, has built a distinguished judicial career spanning the High Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court. According to the Presidency, he is highly regarded for his diligence, integrity, impartiality, and contributions to the growth of Ghana’s jurisprudence.
“His wealth of experience and long service on the Bench render him eminently qualified for the high office of Chief Justice,” the statement noted.
If approved, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie will succeed Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who was removed from office earlier this month following recommendations by a constitutional committee that found grounds of stated misbehavior.
The nomination now awaits the mandatory parliamentary approval before Justice Baffoe-Bonnie can formally assume the role as head of Ghana’s judiciary.
