President Mahama Elevates 21 High Court Judges to Court of Appeal, Including Dormaahene

The Ghana Voice 17-07-2025

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to approve the elevation of 21 High Court judges to the Court of Appeal, in what has been described as one of the most significant appointments in Ghana’s judicial history.

Among the newly elevated justices is the respected traditional ruler, Justice Daniel Mensah, who is also the Omanhene of Dormaa (Dormaahene) and the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs. His inclusion marks a historic moment as he becomes one of the few traditional leaders to simultaneously hold a high-ranking position within the judiciary.

The appointments come on the heels of President Mahama’s recent nomination of seven Appeal Court justices to the Supreme Court, signaling a broader effort by the administration to strengthen the country’s justice delivery system and fill key vacancies within the judiciary.

The new Appeal Court judges are expected to bring renewed energy, legal expertise, and diverse perspectives to the appellate bench, as they prepare to handle a growing docket of civil and criminal appeals across the country.

Legal analysts have described the elevation of the Dormaahene as groundbreaking, given his unique dual role as both a paramount chief and a senior judicial officer. His legal career has been marked by deep knowledge of both customary and constitutional law, making his presence on the appellate bench particularly symbolic and impactful.

The Judicial Council is expected to officially swear in the newly appointed justices in the coming days.
