Police Return GH¢85,000 Found on Techiman–Kumasi Highway to Owner

The Ghana Voice 18-02-2026

Officers of the Bono East Regional Police Command have handed over a bag containing GH¢85,000 to its rightful owner after it was discovered along the highway near Techiman.

According to the Police, the incident occurred in the early hours of February 14, 2026, at about 4:20 a.m., when officers on duty at a snap checkpoint on the Techiman–Kumasi highway noticed a bag lying by the roadside. The bag, believed to have fallen from a moving vehicle, had the name “Ofori” and a contact number written on it.

The duty officers, led by Inspector George Appiah and supported by three other personnel, retrieved the bag and later realised it contained a large sum of money. The officers subsequently handed the bag over to the Regional Command for further investigation.

Police contacted the phone number found on the bag, which led them to a 53-year-old businessman identified as Stephen Ofori from Ashtown in Kumasi. Mr. Ofori later reported to the police to claim ownership of the money.

He explained that the cash, amounting to GH¢85,000, was being transported from a branch of GCB Bank in Wa to Kumasi through a commercial vehicle.

Police verified the amount in the presence of the claimant and confirmed the total sum to be intact. After Mr. Ofori provided satisfactory proof of ownership and the necessary verification procedures were completed, the police released the money to him.

The Bono East Regional Police Command commended the professionalism and integrity of the officers involved, as well as community members who assisted in drawing attention to the abandoned bag.
