NRSA Targets Major Accra Roads in August for Billboard Removal Enforcement

The Ghana Voice 22-07-2025

Accra, Ghana - The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) is set to continue its crackdown on unauthorized outdoor advertising signs and billboards in the road medians of major corridors in the Greater Accra Region this August. This move follows earlier notices and a recent successful enforcement exercise in the Ayawaso West Municipality.

The NRSA has identified four key stretches for the upcoming exercise:

N1 Highway: From the Achimota Overhead to the Dzorwulu Fiesta Royale Traffic Light.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Circle Stretch: From Circle through Odorkor to the Weija intersection.

Spintex Road: From the Action Chapel intersection to the Palace Mall.

Kawokudi to Achimota.

In a press release dated July 22, 2025, the Authority stated that the removal is necessary due to the significant road safety risks posed by these signs. According to the NRSA, the billboards cause "visual and" #cognitive distractions to drivers and obstruct the view of both motorists and pedestrians."

This enforcement action is part of a broader, nationwide effort to improve road safety. The NRSA has been actively campaigning against the wrongful placement of billboards, citing them as a hazard. In April, the Authority issued a 21-day ultimatum to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region to remove such unauthorized structures. This was followed by threats of legal action against non-compliant assemblies in May.

The upcoming exercise in August signals a continuation of the NRSA's firm stance. A recent joint operation with the Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly saw the dismantling of several illegal billboards, with the NRSA emphasizing that such structures endanger road users.

The Authority has issued a "Final Warning" to all advertising companies, their clients, and owners of signs in the specified areas to voluntarily remove them with immediate effect. Failure to comply will result in the forceful removal of the signs by the NRSA and its partners. Furthermore, the full cost of the removal exercise will be surcharged to the owners of the non-compliant signs.

The NRSA reiterated its commitment to "ensuring safer roads for all users" and has urged for full cooperation from all stakeholders.
