NRSA Raises Safety Concerns Over Use of Toyota Voxy Vehicles for Commercial Transport

Lawrence 14-01-2026

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a public notice expressing safety concerns over the widespread use of Toyota Voxy vehicles for commercial passenger transport in Ghana, particularly on long-distance routes.

In a statement dated January 14, 2026, the Authority said it had taken note of growing public concerns regarding the suitability and roadworthiness of some Toyota Voxy vehicles currently operating on Ghana’s roads.

According to the NRSA, a significant number of the vehicles were originally manufactured as right-hand drive (RHD) units and were later converted to left-hand drive (LHD) after importation into the country. Reports available to the Authority indicate that some of these converted vehicles may exhibit handling and stability challenges, especially at higher speeds and when negotiating curves.

The NRSA noted that these reported challenges raise serious concerns about the safety performance and roadworthiness of such vehicles when used for commercial passenger transport, where passenger load and long-distance travel increase operational risks.

In response to the potential public safety risks, and in line with its statutory mandate to promote safer road use and reduce road traffic crashes, the NRSA announced that it is constituting a Technical Working Group (TWG). The group is expected to comprehensively investigate the concerns surrounding Toyota Voxy vehicles to inform any future regulatory action.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the NRSA has issued an interim public advisory, urging motorists and the travelling public to exercise heightened vigilance when operating or patronising Toyota Voxy vehicles used for commercial transport, particularly those that have undergone RHD-to-LHD conversion.

The Authority emphasised that the advisory is a precautionary public safety measure and does not constitute a final determination on the safety or roadworthiness of the Toyota Voxy or any other vehicle category.

“The Authority encourages road users to make informed decisions in the interest of personal safety while investigations are ongoing,” the statement said.

The NRSA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring road safety nationwide and assured the public that further updates will be issued upon completion of the Technical Working Group’s work.
