NPP Debunks Reports of Mrs. Mavis Kumi Eyeing Akwatia Seat
The Ghana Voice 16-07-2025The Eastern Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has refuted claims circulating on social media that Mrs. Mavis Kumi, the widow of the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Hon. Ernest Kumi, is preparing to contest the Akwatia parliamentary seat.
In an official statement issued and signed by the Eastern Regional Chairman, Jeff Konadu Addo, the party categorically described the reports as “false, misleading, and undeserving of public attention.†The statement emphasized that Mrs. Kumi has not expressed any interest in contesting the seat nor participating in active politics at this time.
According to the NPP, close interactions with Mrs. Kumi and her family following the recent death of Hon. Ernest Kumi revealed that her current priority is mourning her husband with dignity and peace, rather than pursuing political ambitions.
“We respectfully urge all Party members, sympathizers, residents of the Akwatia Constituency, and the general public to disregard the flyer in circulation. It does not reflect the wishes or intentions of Mrs. Mavis Kumi, nor has it been sanctioned by the Party at any level,†the statement read.
The party further called on the public to remain sensitive to the grief of the bereaved family and to avoid spreading misinformation that could deepen their pain. It urged all Ghanaians to offer prayers and support to the Kumi family and to uphold the values of unity, decorum, and integrity that the NPP stands for.
