Mahama Establishes Children’s Support Fund for Helicopter Crash Victims’ Families

The Ghana Voice 15-08-2025

President John Dramani Mahama has announced the creation of a Children’s Support Fund to safeguard the future of the children left behind by the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash.

Speaking at the state funeral for the fallen heroes in Accra on Friday, the President said government would provide an initial seed contribution, with a full operational framework to be unveiled within 30 days.

The fund will offer comprehensive assistance, including education from primary to tertiary levels, healthcare coverage—with medical insurance and specialised care where necessary—and welfare support such as shelter, clothing, and essential living expenses.

President Mahama expressed appreciation to Stanbic Bank for opening a dedicated account and contributing GH¢500,000 as the first deposit. He pledged that the fund would be maintained for the long term, with annual public reports to ensure transparency.

“My office will ensure that the Children’s Support Fund is sustained, with opportunities for contributions from citizens, corporate bodies, professional associations, and international partners,” he stated.

Quoting a personal message of comfort, the President urged the nation to rally around the bereaved children:

“Imagine the impact on each of these children, to be told by the adults of this nation, through our contributions, just like Omane told Setor: ‘You are not alone. You’ve got me. Always there to share.’”

The August 6 crash claimed the lives of senior government officials and military personnel on official duty, leaving the nation in mourning and prompting renewed calls for national solidarity.
