Kwesi Pratt Endorses GJA Executives Ahead of Elections — Cites Press Centre Revamp, Welfare Gains, and New Health-Backed Membership Cards

The Ghana Voice 22-06-2025

Veteran journalist and media personality Kwesi Pratt Jnr. has thrown his weight behind the current leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), led by President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, as the association heads to the polls on June 30, 2025.

In a social media post on Friday, June 20, Pratt commended the incumbent executives for what he described as an impressive track record over the past three years. According to him, the GJA’s current leaders have delivered on core mandates ranging from infrastructure to journalist welfare and press freedom advocacy.

“The upcoming elections of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) ought to be nothing more than a formality,” Pratt wrote. “Frankly, I am unable to find fault with the current executives. They have done all that I expected them to do in the last three years.”

He praised the leadership for revamping the International Press Centre, taking journalist training seriously, promoting press freedom, and actively working to enhance the welfare of members.

“I #vote for the retention of the current executives of the GJA,” Pratt concluded in his post, signaling his full endorsement of Dwumfour’s bid for a second term.

Welfare Reforms Deepen as Dwumfour Eyes Second Term

Kwesi Pratt’s endorsement comes just hours after GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour appeared on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program to outline his second-term vision under the banner “Legacy Regime: Securing Our Achievements.”

Among his key proposals is a soon-to-be-launched GJA Membership Card that will provide access to healthcare services under a new Journalists’ Insurance Policy. The initiative is expected to offer at least one medical check-up per year at selected hospitals across the country.

“We have proposals from three companies, and once finalized, the card will give journalists access to medical care,” Dwumfour announced. “This will help us deal with stress and health challenges we go through as media professionals.”

The initiative is part of a broader agenda aimed at solidifying journalist welfare structures, which include institutional legal support, press freedom advocacy, and capacity development programs initiated in his first term.

Dwumfour, who is number one on the ballot paper, is campaigning on the theme of tested and accountable leadership, backed by the powerful slogan #JournalistsLivesMatter.

“If you attack a journalist, you’ve attacked me—the President,” Dwumfour said on the show. “We will come after you. We are building an association that gives hope to journalists.”

Election Day Nears

With endorsements from industry heavyweights like Kwesi Pratt and ongoing reforms that have captured national attention, the upcoming GJA elections are shaping up to be a decisive moment for continuity and change in Ghana’s media leadership.
