Early Jostling Begins for NPP General Secretary Slot Amid Uncertainty Over Election Structure

The Ghana Voice 09-02-2026

Momentum is gradually building within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as early interest emerges in the race for the party’s influential General Secretary position, even though nominations for the contest are yet to be officially opened.

So far, four prominent party figures have been tipped as strong contenders, setting the stage for what political observers expect to be a competitive internal contest that could shape the party’s administrative and strategic direction ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Leading the list is Justin Kodua Frimpong Esq, the incumbent General Secretary, who is widely associated with maintaining party cohesion and administrative continuity. His potential bid is expected to rely heavily on his experience in managing party structures and coordinating national activities.

Also emerging as a possible contender is Hon. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful Esq, former Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West and former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation. She is regarded as a formidable communicator with strong grassroots political activism and digital policy experience. Analysts believe her entry into the race could inject renewed energy into the party’s communication and digital mobilisation strategy.

Another figure attracting attention is Hon. Sylvester Tetteh, former MP for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro and former Deputy Minister for Information. His background in information management and party mobilisation is viewed by some party faithful as a strategic advantage, particularly in strengthening internal coordination and public messaging.

Completing the emerging lineup is Hon. Eugene Boakye Antwi, former MP and ex-Deputy Minister for Works and Housing. He is often credited with championing modernisation and institutional reforms within party structures, making him a potential candidate for members seeking administrative transformation.

Uncertainty Over Electoral Structure

Despite the growing interest, uncertainty remains over the structure the NPP will adopt for its internal elections. Traditionally, the party has followed a bottom-up approach, where elections begin at the polling station level, progressing through constituency and regional executive contests before culminating in the election of national executives and subsequently the presidential candidate.

However, the party recently departed from this tradition during its flagbearer election, where it adopted a “top-down” approach that saw delegates elect former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s 2024 presidential candidate and leader heading into the 2028 elections.

Political watchers say the decision on whether the party will maintain the top-down model or revert to its traditional electoral system could significantly influence campaign strategies and alliances among aspirants.

Strategic Importance of the Position

The General Secretary role is widely considered one of the most powerful administrative positions within the NPP, responsible for coordinating party operations, supervising internal elections, and shaping organisational strategy.

The emerging contest is therefore expected to reflect broader ideological and strategic debates within the party, particularly regarding organisational reforms, communication strategy, and grassroots mobilisation ahead of future electoral battles.

While party leadership has yet to officially announce nomination timelines or election modalities, the early signals of interest underscore growing internal activity as the NPP prepares for a crucial organisational rebuilding phase.

Party members and political observers alike are expected to closely monitor developments as the NPP leadership clarifies its roadmap for the upcoming internal elections.
