Bawumia Reacts to Killing of Ghanaian Traders in Burkina Faso Terror Attack
The Ghana Voice 17-02-2026Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed shock and sorrow over the reported killing and injury of Ghanaian traders following a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso.
The attack, which occurred in Titao, involved a truck transporting Ghanaian tomato traders and has triggered widespread concern over the safety of citizens engaged in cross-border trade within the sub-region.
In a statement, Dr. Bawumia extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished speedy recovery to those injured. He described the incident as tragic and stressed the urgent need for enhanced security cooperation among neighbouring countries.
“Ghanaian traders must not be left to such peril as they go about their trade,” he stated, urging the government to intensify intelligence collaboration with neighbouring states to safeguard Ghanaians living and working abroad.
Dr. Bawumia further called for the strengthening of Ghana’s existing framework for preventing and countering violent extremism and terrorism, noting that regional cooperation remains critical in addressing growing security threats across West Africa.
The Government of Ghana had earlier confirmed the incident through the Minister for the Interior and National Security, who indicated that the Ghanaian diplomatic mission in Burkina Faso is working with local authorities to gather details and identify victims.
Authorities have assured the public that further updates will be provided as investigations continue and support measures are coordinated for affected families.
