Arrests of NPP-Affiliated TikTokers Overshadow One-Week Observance of Military Helicopter Crash

The Ghana Voice 13-08-2025

Today marks exactly one week since the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people, including crew members and senior government officials. In keeping with Ghanaian tradition and funeral customs, the day would ordinarily have been marked with solemn one-week observances in honour of the departed.

However, the milestone has been largely overshadowed by the arrest of social media personalities linked to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). TikTokers “Fante Comedy” and “AY,” along with prominent NPP social media activist Sir Obama Pokuase, were taken into custody in the past few days, sparking heated political debate and dominating the national conversation.

Details surrounding the arrests remain sketchy, but reports indicate they are connected to recent online posts and commentary deemed to breach certain laws. The development has ignited fierce exchanges between government supporters and opposition voices on social media, shifting public attention away from the somber remembrance of the helicopter crash victims.

The crash, which occurred on August 6, 2025, left the nation reeling. The eight who perished—described by many as gallant servants of the Republic—were on official duty when their aircraft went down. Families of the victims, as well as colleagues in the military and government, had hoped the one-week commemoration would serve as a moment of unity and reflection.

Instead, political tensions and the arrest saga have taken center stage, leaving some observers lamenting what they see as a distraction from a moment that should have been dedicated solely to honouring the dead.
