Ablakwa Cancels Planned “Surprise” Airport Welcome, Urges Focus on National Duty

The Ghana Voice 30-03-2026

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has directed the immediate cancellation of a planned “surprise” welcome ceremony to be held in his honour by Staff of his Ministry.
In a statement issued issued on his facebook page ahead of his return to Ghana, the Minister disclosed that he had become aware of arrangements by staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organize a ceremonial reception in recognition of what they described as a significant national achievement.

According to him, checks with the Ministry’s management confirmed that such gestures are a long-standing tradition aimed at celebrating major accomplishments and projecting national pride.

However, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that he does not consider the recent development a personal triumph warranting celebration.
He noted that while he appreciates the thoughtfulness behind the gesture, his priority remains focused on the broader national agenda.
“I have expressed my appreciation to management for their thoughtful gesture and instructed that all such plans to offer me a surprise welcome at the airport be cancelled immediately,” he stated.
The Minister further indicated that he would have opposed the idea had he been consulted beforehand, stressing that the work of advancing Ghana’s foreign policy and international standing is ongoing.

“This is not a personal victory, and besides, there is more work ahead of us,” he added.

Mr. Ablakwa also commended staff of the Ministry for their dedication and professionalism, describing them as “dynamic and talented,” while urging continued commitment to national service.

He concluded his message with a call for sustained national progress, invoking blessings for the country under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
“For God, Country and Continent,” the Minister affirmed.
The development underscores a leadership approach that prioritizes institutional responsibility over personal recognition, even as Ghana continues to pursue a stronger presence on the global stage.
