“440 Excavators Seized! Mahama’s Galamsey Crackdown Shakes Illegal Miners”

The Ghana Voice 11-09-2025

President Mahama says Ghana’s fight against illegal mining is showing results, with 440 excavators seized and nine forest reserves reclaimed in the past eight months.

The President said a new National Anti-Illegal Mining Secretariat (NIMOS) has been established to coordinate enforcement.

Additionally, 2,000 Blue-Water Guards have been recruited to protect rivers and forest reserves.

Seized water pumps are being reassigned to farmers, while port authorities have been tasked to track excavators at entry points.

“This government is serious about ending galamsey and restoring our environment,” Mr. Mahama said.

Environmental groups have praised the steps but cautioned that community livelihoods must also be protected.
