Paul Adom-Otchere’s Post-Bail “Thank You” Video Sparks Social Media Storm

The Ghana Voice 02-08-2025

Just hours after securing his release from the custody of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Paul Adom-Otchere has set social media ablaze — not for the case that landed him behind bars, but for his own words in a post-bail “thank you” video.

In the clip, the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Airports Company Limited listed a number of influential figures and institutions he claims intervened to secure his release.

Among those he named:

  • Manhyia Palace, which he said “put pressure on the system” through his friend Adenta Kumi,
  • Pastor Mensah Otabil,
  • Prophet Sarkodie,
  • Prophet Bernard,
  • Friends in the NDC who, according to him, told him “Kissi Agyebeng is wasting everybody’s time”, and
  • Lawyer Thaddeus Sory.

The video, which was apparently intended as a gesture of gratitude, has instead triggered widespread outrage, ridicule, and disbelief online — with critics accusing Adom-Otchere of undermining public trust in the justice system and publicly implicating prominent individuals and revered institutions in behind-the-scenes interference.

Social Media Reacts: Shock, Sarcasm, and Outrage

Comments have poured in across Facebook, X, and WhatsApp groups, reflecting a mix of cynicism and frustration:

“Why must they call to intervene in the first place??? So people put in position to work for the state will steal to enrich themselves and when called to answer questions then chiefs call to intervene??? SMFH” — Kwame Menka

“He wanted to expose the pretences of our system towards nation building.” — Fakibi Joseph

“If that’s true then Ghana has a long way to go. China is where it is today because of the brutal fight against corruption.” — Haroun Issah

“Now Mahyia Palace protects criminals? Why can’t we allow our laws to work?” — Manna Wills

“It was an open secret but now confirmed — some traditional and religious leaders intercede on behalf of criminals under investigation. The ancestors are exposing things.” — Israel Avah

“If calling out those who intervened to beg for release wasn’t wise, what does that make Paul? This isn’t the first time he’s made unwise claims.” — Mohammed Marzug Yambidoogo

The Wontumi Connection

Some have also drawn parallels between Adom-Otchere’s claims and the recent release of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Bosiako (“Chairman Wontumi”) from EOCO custody. His freedom coincided with the visit of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to the institution — fuelling speculation about the influence of Manhyia Palace in politically sensitive cases.

Adom-Otchere’s release came after the OSP accepted revised bail terms proposed by his lawyers, with the Jospong Group of Companies acting as surety. He had initially been unable to meet the OSP’s original requirement to present two landed properties in his name — revealing that he owns none in Ghana.

While the corruption investigation into the controversial revenue assurance contract at GACL remains active, his remarks have now shifted the public conversation from the allegations themselves to the influence networks behind high-profile legal battles.

What was intended as a moment of appreciation has become a self-inflicted PR crisis — one that not only raises fresh questions about his own judgment, but also thrusts powerful religious and traditional leaders into the center of Ghana’s national debate on corruption and justice.
