Elect Executives Before 2028 Flagbearer – Patrick Boamah Urges NPP Leadership to Rethink Timetable
The Ghana Voice 03-07-2025In a letter dated Wednesday, July 2, Mr. Boamah argued that a flagbearer must emerge in partnership with a fresh leadership team that reflects the NPP’s renewed strategic vision and has a legitimate mandate to support the campaign machinery for the 2028 general elections.
“The flagbearer is going to work with the new executives during campaigns for the 2028 elections. It is therefore strategic to wait for the tenure of office of the current executives to elapse next year before electing the flagbearer,†he stated.
Calls for Strategic Sequencing and Unity
Boamah emphasized that reversing the electoral sequence, as currently proposed by party leadership — where the flagbearer is to be elected before executive elections — threatens party cohesion and could handicap campaign readiness.
He warned that bypassing the traditional bottom-up structure, in favor of a top-down model, would alienate the grassroots and erode the participatory culture that has long been the NPP’s strength.
“Aligning party structures ahead of major elections is not just procedural. It is strategic,†he stressed, cautioning that internal disorganization could prove costly in 2028.
Tackling Apathy and Rebuilding Trust
The MP also raised alarm over growing voter apathy within the party base, noting that the NPP must address internal disillusionment through deliberate structural reforms and active grassroots engagement.
According to him, many loyal party members feel excluded from key decision-making processes and demotivated by the current state of affairs. Reversing this trend, he said, requires urgent institutional renewal.
Boamah Backs Grassroots Empowerment and Expanded Electoral College
Reaffirming his commitment to grassroots democracy, Mr. Boamah reiterated support for the bottom-up approach, which empowers polling station executives, area coordinators, and constituency officers. He urged the party not only to protect this structure but to enhance it.
As part of this vision, he proposed expanding the party’s electoral college to include all card-bearing members in good standing, particularly those who consistently pay their dues. He argued that such a move would deepen democratic participation, enhance accountability, and simultaneously provide a sustainable funding base for the party’s operations.
Background: Flagbearer Race and Electoral Timetable in Focus
Boamah’s intervention comes amid heightened debate over the NPP’s proposed electoral timetable, which places flagbearer primaries in January 2026, ahead of executive elections. The move has triggered widespread backlash from stakeholders who believe it tilts the process in favor of the current party leadership and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s 2024 flagbearer and immediate past Vice President.
Several aspirants and analysts have described the timetable as a threat to transparency and internal democracy, while others see it as a strategy to consolidate power before any structural reforms can take place.
The Road Ahead
With polling station elections scheduled for December 2025 and the flagbearer race heating up, the coming months will be decisive for the party’s future direction.
Patrick Boamah’s suggestions add to the growing calls for a more inclusive, transparent, and strategic approach to the NPP’s reorganization as it seeks to rebound from its 2024 electoral defeat.
