Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum Declares Intent to Contest NPP Flagbearership

The Ghana Voice 19-06-2025

Former Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially declared his intention to contest for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), pending the formal opening of nominations by the party.

In a statement widely shared on social media and news platforms, Dr. Adutwum said:

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party.”

Dr. Adutwum, a globally respected educator and reform advocate, is credited with playing a central role in shaping Ghana’s contemporary educational landscape. As Education Minister, he spearheaded major policy initiatives including the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme and the expansion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education across the country.

His declaration adds a technocratic and education-centered dimension to what is expected to be a keenly contested internal race as the NPP readies itself to choose a new leader ahead of the 2028 general elections.

If elected as flagbearer, Dr. Adutwum is expected to campaign on a platform rooted in education transformation, innovation, and inclusive national development—themes that have defined much of his public service career.

He now joins an already growing list of aspirants who have declared their intentions to lead the party, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, and Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Bryan Acheampong.

Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, a former General Secretary of the party and seasoned political figure, is also expected to formally announce his candidacy in the coming days.

As anticipation builds, the NPP’s leadership race is shaping up to be one of the most consequential internal contests in recent party history, with each contender presenting unique visions and political appeal across different segments of the party and national electorate.
