Ayawaso East Primaries Row Deepens as Baba Jamal Denies Vote Buying Allegations

The controversy surrounding the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency has intensified, with parliamentary candidate Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed strongly denying allegations of vote buying leveled against him.

This follows a call by the NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament for the annulment of the primaries and the possible disqualification of candidates implicated in alleged electoral malpractice.

In a press release, Baba Jamal dismissed claims that he engaged in vote buying during the just-ended primaries, describing the allegations as unfounded. He stated that he is prepared to fully cooperate with any investigations initiated by the party to establish the truth.

The former government appointee also addressed reports indicating that he had been recalled from his role as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria over the allegations. He acknowledged a communiqué referenced by government communicators and a separate statement from NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, who has called for investigations into the matter.

Baba Jamal reaffirmed his commitment to due process, stressing that he has not participated in any form of electoral malpractice. He further expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for the opportunity previously given to him to serve the country in a diplomatic capacity.

Despite the ongoing controversy, Baba Jamal thanked party supporters in Ayawaso East for their confidence in him and reiterated his readiness to lead the party into the upcoming by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.

The development sets the stage for a potential internal showdown within the NDC, as party leadership has set up a Three Member Committee to investigate the allegations while managing political tensions ahead of the crucial by-election.
