Headline: NPP Cracks the Whip: Flagbearer Aspirants Summoned, Abronye Referred to Disciplinary Committee, Informal Campaign Caucuses Banned
The Ghana Voice 25-06-2025By Lawrence Kojo Addo Cheremeh
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has moved to tighten internal discipline and reassert control over its flagbearer selection process ahead of the 2028 general elections. In a strongly worded statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and dated June 24, 2025, the party outlined a series of decisions taken by the National Steering Committee to maintain order, unity, and transparency.
Flagbearer Aspirants Summoned for High-Level Meeting
All presidential flagbearer aspirants of the NPP have been directed to attend a mandatory meeting with the National Steering Committee and the Council of Elders on July 3, 2025. The meeting, according to party insiders, aims to address the growing tension within the party ranks, enforce campaign ethics, and reaffirm the NPP’s commitment to a fair and disciplined internal electoral process.
The 2028 flagbearer race has already attracted a high-profile list of contenders, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Hon. Bryan Acheampong, Addai Nimo, Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, and Hon. Yaw Patrick Boamah.
Abronye Faces Disciplinary Action for Repeated Misconduct
In a significant move, the party has referred Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC and the Bono Regional Chairman, to the National Disciplinary Committee. The referral follows his continued use of what the party describes as “unguarded comments” in public, despite previous warnings.
The General Secretary emphasized that Abronye’s repeated breaches of party communication protocols undermine the NPP’s cohesion and violate its internal code of conduct.
Ban on Informal Campaign Caucuses
In a further bid to sanitize the internal race, the NPP has also banned all informal caucus meetings between presidential aspirants and current or former party executives. The party stated that such gatherings are not only unauthorized but constitute a breach of NPP campaign regulations.
The directive warns that any violation of this order will attract disciplinary consequences, as the leadership aims to prevent the emergence of factionalism, vote-buying schemes, and undue influence in the lead-up to the presidential primaries, scheduled for January 2026.
A Stern Reminder: Discipline Above All
“These actions serve as a clear reminder that the NPP remains committed to preserving party unity, enforcing discipline, and ensuring a level playing field for all presidential aspirants,” the party’s statement declared.
Party analysts interpret these latest moves as a strategic effort by the leadership to prevent a repeat of the chaotic internal tensions that marred the 2024 campaign season, which many believe contributed to the party’s electoral loss.
What Next?
With polling station elections scheduled for December 2025, the party is entering a critical phase of internal reorganization. The outcome of the July 3 meeting and the disciplinary proceedings against Abronye will serve as key indicators of the NPP’s resolve to rebuild credibility and cohesion ahead of the national vote in 2028.
Observers will be watching closely to see whether these measures foster unity or trigger fresh resistance within the party’s powerful grassroots and regional blocs.
