Grief Sweeps Obogu as 16 Saviour Church Youth Members Laid to Rest After Tragic Accident

The Ghana Voice 31-07-2025

The Obogu community in the Asante-Akim South Municipality has been thrown into deep mourning  as it has held a mass burial ceremony for 16 members of the Saviour Church Youth Ministry who perished in a ghastly road accident on the Juaso-Nkawkaw stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway.

The tragic incident occurred while the youth were returning from a church congress held in Koforidua. According to eyewitness reports, a fuel tanker travelling toward Accra burst a tyre while attempting to overtake another vehicle. The tanker veered uncontrollably into the opposite lane and collided head-on with a Ford Transit bus conveying the young church members.

Fifteen of the passengers died on the spot, while four others sustained critical injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for urgent medical attention. One of the injured later succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll to sixteen.

The atmosphere in Obogu was heavy with grief as family members, friends, traditional leaders, and church congregants gathered in sorrowful unity to bid farewell to the deceased. The mass burial, marked by heart-wrenching scenes, saw the community stand still in a show of solidarity and mourning.

Leaders of the Saviour Church described the tragedy as one of the darkest moments in the church’s history. “We are shattered. These were vibrant, dedicated youth who had committed their lives to the service of God and community,” one church elder said, adding that “now is a time for spiritual strength and unity.”

The loss has reignited calls for stricter enforcement of transport safety regulations, especially for heavy-duty vehicles that frequent Ghana’s major highways.

As Obogu comes to terms with this harrowing loss, the community holds onto faith, prayer, and collective strength to heal from a tragedy that has left a lasting scar.
