GJA Gives Police Monday Ultimatum Over Assault on GHOne Journalist — Dwumfour Says Interdiction “Not Enough”

The Ghana Voice 11-07-2025

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has issued a Monday ultimatum to the Ghana Police Service, demanding full disciplinary and legal action against the senior police officer who was captured on video assaulting GHOne journalist Banahene Agyekum during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election re-run.

In a strong statement, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour declared that the mere interdiction of the officer is insufficient, emphasizing that the attack is a criminal act that must be punished by law, not just internal sanctions.

“Interdiction is not enough for the ordeal of the GHOne journalist. If this were a civilian, the person would have been arrested and put before court,” Dwumfour said.

He described the case as a litmus test for the leadership of the current IGP and a chance for the Police Service to demonstrate its commitment to professionalism and accountability.

“This is the time for the IGP to prove his authority and show that the Ghana Police Service does not condone impunity,” he added.

GJA Stands Behind Assaulted Journalists

Dwumfour reaffirmed the Association’s unwavering support for Banahene Agyekum, as well as Salomey Nartey of the Multimedia Group, who was also reportedly attacked by unidentified individuals while on assignment.

“We will not tolerate the intimidation or brutalization of any journalist. The GJA stands firmly with Banahene and Salomey and will pursue justice on their behalf,” he assured.

Police Response: Officer Interdicted, Investigation Launched

The Ghana Police Service, in a July 11 press release signed by ASP Richmond Mensah, confirmed the interdiction of the officer involved and announced that the matter had been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for further investigation.

“We would like to assure the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the matter and further updates will be communicated,” the statement read.

Minister, Mayor, GJA Speak with One Voice

Earlier this week, Minister of Government Communication Felix Kwakye Ofosu condemned the attack during the swearing-in of GJA’s newly elected executives, describing it as unacceptable and calling on the IGP to act swiftly.

Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who witnessed the assault firsthand, labeled the officer “hot-tempered” and urged for his immediate removal from any election-related duties.

A Defining Moment for Press Freedom

The GJA’s ultimatum marks a significant moment in the ongoing struggle for journalist safety in Ghana, particularly during political events and elections.

“The media must not be gagged. We are watching, and we expect real action—not just words,” Dwumfour warned.

As pressure mounts, all eyes are on the Ghana Police Service to ensure justice is served and trust is restored.
